There were 100 transparent cola bottle green, 300 opaque metallic silver & 600 black pressed, all on 200g virgin vinyl. This will be available at taigarecords.com within the next 2 weeks, stay tuned.

Lotus Eaters Wurmwulv 2xLP - TAIGA 15
Stephen O'Malley, James Plotkin & Aaron Turner revisit their Wurmwulv album recorded between 2001-2003 to release it on vinyl for the first time. Like their 2009 Mind Control for Infants 2xLP, Wurmwulv has been expanded, remixed and rearranged for this vinyl edition using alternate takes from the original recording sessions. This version also incorporates reconfigured material from their out of print self-titled 7" on Drone Records. The 53:29 minutes of Wurmwulv will be spread over 3 sides of music with a D side etching. It will be packaged in a Stoughton tip-on gatefold jacket with new artwork featuring paintings by Stephen Kasner created specifically for this edition. The Wurmwulv 2xLP will be Taiga's first release of 2011, cover art is pictured above.

Rafael Toral Space Elements Vol III LP
The third release in Toral's Space Elements series with a new set of collaborators including Tatsuya Nakatani and others to be announced. This volume is a denser approach with more rhythmic character, drums and percussion.

Eleh Homage to Pointed Waveforms LP
The final LP in the Homage series will incorporate both triangle and sawtooth waves and be titled Homage to Pointed Waveforms.

Jon Mueller & James Plotkin tba LP
This duo first collaborated on Mueller's Physical Changes LP+CD+DVD released by Table of the Elements. Yet to be titled, this LP will showcase the evolution of their collaboration.

If you read this site, you’ve probably partaken of Stephen Kasner’s work. He has done album covers, artwork, and posters for Integrity, Sunn O))), Isis, Justin Broadrick, Runhild Gammelsæter, Khlyst, Darsombra, Suma, and many more. His haunting style is unmistakable. I have spent much time gazing at his work. Here is an interview I did with him, in which he discusses specific pieces that he’s done. Below are some of my favorite works of his.

Now Stephen needs your help. He is extremely private, so circumstances must be dire for him to reach out like this. Out of privacy considerations, he asked that his medical condition not be named. Below is his statement.

Stephen Kasner has recently been diagnosed with some serious medical issues. Like many artists who lack the benefit of medical insurance, he pushed the situation aside until it became unavoidable. Emergency care has been initiated, but he is not out of the woods yet, and his continued care is extremely necessary – hence this call for aid to friends, admirers of his art, and comrades alike.

There are two ways to help.

1. The first is a direct donation by PayPal to kasner@stephenkasner.com. Times are tough, so no amount is too small. If 1,000 people give $5 each, that goes a long way. Depending on his health, Kasner will do drawings/sketches for all who donate.

2. The second is to purchase merch from Kasner. He has two stores, a main one and one for his Blood Fountains musical project. You can buy books, album art prints, CD’s, silkscreens, posters, and more. They make great gifts for this holiday season.

Timeless Pulse Trio is Pauline Oliveros, accordion, with percussionists George Marsh and Jennifer Wilsey. Released in honor of the 20th annual Deep Listening Retreats held this year in Camallera, Spain and Petaluma, California, this is the third Timeless Pulse album. Formed in 1991 during a residency at the Deep Listening Institute, the full ensemble, including Thomas Buckner and David Wessel, has released two live recordings on CD: "Live at CNMAT" and "Quintet." This is the first time this entity has been stripped down to a trio, recorded in a studio and released on vinyl. Divided into four sides with titled subsections, the album includes guests Ione and Joyce Kouffman contributing spoken word and cello on “Real As Any Dream.”

Their double LP comes packaged in the custom designed slipcover and jacket with doublewide spines used for the Deep Listening Band "Then & Now Now & Then" 2xLP. 500 were pressed, 100 white and 400 black vinyl.

Most excellent newie from Rafael Toral, whom I previously knew only for his excellent solo albums of processed guitar work. On Space Elements Volume II (STAUBGOLD DIGITAL 5), he’s exploring his collaborative endeavours and working with some topnotch musicians including Manuel Mota and Evan Parker. The instrumentation here (vibraphone, trumpet, percussion, Fender Rhodes) isn’t too far away from what you’d expect to find at any Miles Davis session recorded after 1970, and perhaps it isn’t too fanciful to suggest Toral is attempting a contemporary update on electric free jazz. Of course, this album is far more restrained and abstract than Agharta or Dark Magus, curbing the excesses of free improvisation into a carefully-constructed suite of space-age sounds, with oodles of ‘white space’. On the strength of this, I’d expect Toral to be awarded a pavilion to himself at the next world’s fair where he shows us the living room of the future with its weightless bookcases and music imprinted on little sugar-coated pills. This’ll be out at the end of April 2010.

Douglas Quin’s Fathom brings together four extended underwater soundscapes—two each from the Arctic and Antarctic. The recordings have been gathered over a period of 15 years, capturing an extraordinary palette of sonic voices, events, spaces, and textures. To the human ear, these soundscapes are haunting and otherworldly; yet they are very much of this world—out of earreach. The tracks are minimally edited and are his first field recordings to be archived in vinyl. Included with the release is a sealed envelope containing an insert with specific locations, animals, and other elements heard, giving listeners the option to absorb sound with or without association. The envelope is printed with liner notes and comments from Dutch journalist and music critic René van Peer. Mastered by James Plotkin, cut direct to metal and pressed on 200 gram virgin-vinyl, Fathom comes packaged in custom letterpressed materials and is presented as a limited edition of 1000.

Douglas Quin is a sound designer, naturalist, public radio commentator, educator, and music composer. For over 20 years Quin has traveled widely, documenting the natural soundscape—from Antarctic ice to Arctic tundra and from African savannah to Amazon rainforest. His recordings of endangered and disappearing habitats represent one of the most unique and extensive collections anywhere. Quin recently created the sound design for and mixed Werner Herzog's Academy Award® nominated film, Encounters At the End of the World. He contributed to the sound design for Spore, a game from Maxis/Electronic Art, and has also worked on exhibits for the Smithsonian Institution National Museum of Natural History, American Museum of Natural History, and the Polish Academy of Sciences, among others.

Quin is an Associate Professor in the Television, Radio and Film Department at the S. I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University. He is currently involved as a bioacoustics researcher with the Kagu Recovery Plan and Conservation Research New Caledonia in conservation efforts to protect the critically endangered kagu bird. Quin recently collaborated with clarinetist F. Gerard Errante on his CD release, Delicate Balance, and is composing a new work for the acclaimed Kronos Quartet featuring soundscapes and interactive electronics using the K-Bow—a new bow controller by instrument builder Keith McMillen.

Tatsuya Nakatani is no punk, but he's a self-sufficient road dog on par with the Minutemen, who famously declared "We jam econo." The Osaka-born, Pennsylvania-based percussionist is in the middle of a four-month tour he booked himself, which will take him across the country and down to Mexico; along the way he'll be selling his self-released CDs and sometimes sleeping in his Honda Element. During his three days in Chicago this week he'll play with locals in configurations that will showcase his mastery both of egoless collaboration and of solitary performance. On Fever Dream (Taiga), a new double LP by the improvising trio MAP, Nakatani's strategically placed drum strikes and rushes of clattering metal mesh with Reuben Radding's groaning double bass, Mary Halvorson's tight knots of guitar notes, and potent silences to form constantly shifting, perfectly balanced tableaux. And his latest solo CD, Abiogenesis (on his own H&H label), is a study of economy; many of its 15 tracks make concise, compelling statements using just one element of his percussion setup, which usually includes metal bowls, three drums, a homemade bow, and two sizable gongs (which he's bringing with him on tour for the first time). Space Elements Vol. II is the fourth release in Rafael Toral’s ongoing project, the Space Program. Following the first "Elements" release, this volume features a new set of collaborators: Evan Parker (soprano sax), Manuel Mota (guitar), Afonso Simões (drums), Stefano Tedesco (vibraphone), João Paulo Feliciano (rhodes piano), and Ruben Costa (digital synthesizer), as well as returning guests Sei Miguel (trumpet), César Burago (percussion), Fala Mariam (trombone), and Rute Praça (cello). Space Elements Vol. II displays a melodic quality that, along with a refined management of silence, marks a new area and consolidates the Space Program's complex network. Its spaciousness is explained in Toral’s liner notes: “While finding ways to make decisions on sound emission, it became evident to me that such sounds should have a reason to exist, they should be essential and necessary.”
Dan Warburton's writing in the Wire about Space fits Space Elements Vol. II perfectly: "The melodic logic that drives certain instruments within "Space" also recalls birdsong, with dense, convoluted runs of twittering melody ending in single piping notes, as spontaneous as Messiaen's birdsong transcriptions were painstaking and meticulous."
Toral's music is a jazz-inspired reevaluation of live electronics: "Despite working in a sound world that is cosmetically closer to R2D2’s vocabulary than Louis Armstrong’s or John Coltrane’s, Toral has claimed a kinship to jazz because it models instant music making within a disciplined framework" (Bill Meyer, Dusted); "Toral is looking for nothing less than a totally fresh language to work in" (The Wire).
Space Elements Vol. II was mastered direct to metal from 24-bit files and pressed on clear 200 gram virgin-vinyl. With design by Helder Luis at NOTYPE, the LP features a collage by João Paulo Feliciano. Presented in a limited edition of 500. CD Version available on Staubgold.

TAIGA 11 - Douglas Quin Fathom LP = April/May 2010

Fathom, an album of underwater field recordings from the polar regions of Earth, by Douglas Quin, to be released on vinyl in April 2010. TAIGA records presents this LP, mastered by James Plotkin, cut direct to metal from 24-bit wav files and pressed on 200-gram virgin vinyl for ultimate detail and clarity. Arctic on one side, Antarctic on the other, over 40 minutes of unbelievable natural sounds from areas of our planet that few of us will visit. Packaged in custom letterpress materials printed by Studio on Fire featuring drawings by Mitchell Dose and an essay by René van Peer.

MAP is Mary Halvorson (guitar), Tatsuya Nakatani (percussion) and Reuben Radding (bass). Fever Dream is a vinyl-only release of high-temperature improvisations that elicit abstract thought. Following their first album, Six Improvisations for Guitar, Bass and Drums, a somber black & white affair with former bassist Clayton Thomas released on CD in 2004, Fever Dream blasts forth from the sweaty sheets of a sleepless night in vivid color. Meticulously recorded by new bassist Radding and mastered by James Plotkin, the trio sounds dense, bright and clear.

Prolific in myriad collaborative configurations, all three members of MAP have been carving their own paths in the world of contemporary improvisation. According to Steve Dollar in the New York Sun, Halvorson “plays guitar in a way that fractures conventions, restlessly inventing her own paradigms.” Julian Cowley wrote for the Wire magazine, “Nakatani’s sparse punctuation suggests observance of esoteric ritual.” All About Jazz’s Troy Collins praised Radding, “Whether throttling gnarled motifs or eliciting spectral harmonics, his resonant tone and agile phrasing is captivating.” More than a side-project, MAP is intrinsic to these musicians’ collective maturation and Fever Dream is evidence of advancement.

This three-sided double LP was cut direct to metal and pressed on 200g virgin vinyl, including a lacy D-side etching. It comes housed in an old-style Stoughton tip-on gatefold jacket designed by Minneapolis firm Loaf Nest. The jacket is printed in blinding full color on uncoated paper with cyan flooded pockets. Presented in a limited edition of 1000.

Almost 4 months have passed since the Eleh "Sine Wave" LP was released and it has felt like an eternity. The Lotus Eaters "Mind Control for Infants" 2xLP is the most custom project we have undertaken as far as manufacturing is concerned. We appreciate the patience of everyone who has been waiting for this release for months. The jackets would have arrived here this week but there were more manufacturing delays due to the complicated nature of the project. All of the kinks have now been ironed out with the jackets. They should be finished and heading to Minneapolis by the end of the week. We'll start taking orders as soon as we have confirmed that the jackets are completed and we should be able to start shipping them out next week. An announcement will be made here once we have set an official date to begin taking orders. Again, thanks for the patience, it will be worth the wait.

TAIGA 7 - Eleh Homage to the Sine Wave LP is now available in our shop.

The first 100 copies include a screenprint designed by John Brien of Important Records. The prints are 3-color on 12x12 inch thick paper and are signed & numbered by John. They were printed by Neil Burke at Monoroid. *The LPs including the print are slightly more expensive than the standard edition.

The new Sine Wave LP is the second in a series that began with Homage to the Square Wave, which was released almost exactly one year ago. Like Square Wave, this new LP comes housed in a 2-color letterpress jacket printed by Studio on Fire. They were printed flat on 160lb 100% post-consumer waste stock, die-cut, folded and glued resulting in a letterpressed jacket with a printed spine. The Sine Wave LP was pressed on 200g virgin vinyl that was mastered by James Plotkin, cut direct to metal and released in a hand-numbered edition of 500.

We are also offering a package deal of our 4 other currently available releases at a discounted price.

Die modifications for letterpressed LP jacket

On the table there are two jackets seen from the bottom. The top jacket is the Square Wave LP and the bottom is a sample of the upcoming Sine Wave LP. We manufactured a die to cut the Square Wave jackets after they were letterpressed but there was one detail that was not quite right. There was only one score on the top and bottom of the jacket for the glue tabs to fold in and there were two reasons this was not ideal. Most importantly, this single fold made it a challenge to slide the thick 200 gram record in and out of the sleeve. Additionally, on a cosmetic note, it created an unattractive extremely slender triangle shape from the spine to the opening. Since the same die was being used to cut the Sine Wave LP jackets, we modified it to eliminate these issues by adding an additional score to each glue tab. The sample shows not only a positive result but a vast improvement. Heavyweight vinyl slides in and out easily while the top and bottom now look boxed-out, solid and rectangular.

The 100% post-consumer waste 160lb paper stock made by Smart Genesis was the cause of delay in getting the new Eleh LP jackets printed. The paper was out of stock from the manufacturer and production of it was continually delayed. This is the same stock we used for the Square Wave LP jackets and because consistency is key with these releases, compromises were not made. Finally produced and delivered to the printer, here it is in action, being letterpressed at Studio on Fire. There is only one place in Minneapolis that has a large enough press to print something this big. They also keep a blog called Beast Pieces that is vigorously updated and rich with information. Continually churning out impressive print work and divulging the delicate intricacies of the process on their blog, Studio on Fire is something to be cherished.
